The First Steps: What to do when you get your "Positive Decision."

The moment you receive your decision, you have 42 days to leave your current accommodation. You must act immediately because the system takes time to process.

1. Apply for Universal Credit (Income)

Action: You do not need to wait for your BRP card; you can use your eVisa or the Home Office decision letter to start your claim online.

• Warning: There is a 5-week wait for the first payment. Ask for an "Advance Payment" during your first interview at the Jobcentre.

Who can help: * Citizens Advice "Help to Claim" Service: Call 0800 144 8 444.

Migrant Help: Call their free 24/7 helpline at 0808 8010 503.

2. Prevent Homelessness (Housing)

• Action: Take your "Notice to Quit" (the letter saying you must leave) to the local Council's Housing Department immediately. They have a legal duty to help you if you are at risk of homelessness.

• Action: Apply for a Refugee Integration Loan. This is a government loan to help with a rent deposit or the purchase of essential household items.

Who can help:

  • Refugees at Home: They connect refugees with people who have a spare room. Apply at refugeesathome.org.
  • NACCOM: Use their Member Directory to find local charities that provide emergency shelter for refugees in the city you are moving to.

3. Open a Bank Account

• Action: You need a bank account for your Universal Credit and future wages. Many banks (like Monzo or HSBC) have specific "Refugee Bank Account" processes.

• Who can help: * The Refugee Council: They have "Move-On" teams that help with the paperwork for bank accounts. Call their infoline: 0808 196 7273.

4. Emergency Food and Support

• Action: If you have no money for food during the 42-day "gap," do not wait.

Who can help:

British Red Cross: They provide emergency cash and food vouchers for newly recognized refugees. Call their refugee support line: 0808 196 3651.

Voices in Exile (Sussex/Southeast): If you are still near Crowborough or moving to Brighton/Surrey, call 01273 328598 for food and legal advocacy.
